story of a Celtic girl's experience of Britannia at war.

Q What's your favourite part of the story?

A The ending, with Sparrow and Aifa's finger! It made me cry. I also like it when Aifa stands up to Didius. (Alfie of Berkhamsted called him Hideous Didius!)

"Sue Hampton's books are a rare breath of fresh air in the world of children's literature, being that combination of good writing and a good story." (Book review, St Mary's Church magazine.)

IS YOUR SCHOOL STUDYING THE ROMANS AND CELTS? Sue's book is carefully researched with advice from the Roman curator at the Museum of London.

Older readers enjoy the psychology and emotional drama. Aifa's story is timeless in the sense that there will always be young, innocent victims of war

Michael Morpurgo's review of Spirit and Fire:
"An enthralling account of the Roman occupation of Britain. A powerfully written debut in a novel that lingers long."
